The National Health Insurance Bill has been making news recently with a lot of arguments for and against it being the major discussion points. For an average citizen who has never heard of this bill or what it aims to do, the following will provide some insight on what National Health Insurance is.
Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize introduced the National Health Insurance Bill (NHI) early this month in Parliament. This health insurance is a financing system that will ensure that all South African citizens and legal long-term residents are provided with essential healthcare, regardless of their employment status and ability to make a direct monetary contribution to the NHI fund.
This health insurance will provide access to comprehensive healthcare services free of charge at the point of use at accredited health facilities such as clinics, hospitals and private health practitioners. The implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) is only expected to be completed in full by 2026.
