Private Healthcare Not all it’s Cracked Up to Be?

Private Healthcare Not all it’s Cracked Up to Be?

There is a very wide public perception in South Africa that private healthcare is significantly better than public healthcare. While these perceptions are true on many fronts, there are many faults within the private healthcare system that don’t often make front page news.

Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku had quite a lot to say about how private healthcare systems function. Masuku claimed that most private hospitals offer no real quality besides functioning as good bed and breakfast facilities. He said that most private healthcare facilities are over-serviced, had an under usage of bed space and a lack of doctors.

Masuku claims that public healthcare will far surpass private healthcare when the NHI Bill is passed. It was reported by News24 that NHI will create a single pool of healthcare funding for private and public healthcare providers through the fund which will pay public and private healthcare providers on the same basis and expect the same standard of care from both.

Where do you get most of your health needs met? Private or Public? Comment Below.
