Manchester United played against Wolves at Molineux on the 19th of August. The match ended with a draw after each team scored 1 goal respectively. However, it did not just end there. Pogba was set to score a penalty for Manchester United, but unfortunately failed to do so.
Pogba’s failure to score the penalty led to a massive backlash on twitter. The midfielder was subject to racist attacks from Manchester supporters who blamed him for the disappointing draw. Pogba’s teammates and club quickly rallied for him, condemning the racist abuse and asking for social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram to do more about abuse online.
Manchester United released a club statement saying, “Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative. We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases.”
Pogba is one of the many English footballers to face racism in 2019.
